Although, there is no shortage of care givers in Canada, traditionally, there has been a shortage of qualified individuals in Canada who are willing to live in and work in private households.

A live-in caregiver is a person who provides services without supervision in the private household in Canada where the person being cared for resides in one of the following fields.

  • child care
  • senior home support care or
  • care of the disabled people

Live-in care givers need to obtain a temporary residents visa from outside Canada, then they may apply for permanent residence after successfully completing two years of full-time employment as a live in caregiver.

Note: After 24 months of working as a live-in caregiver in Canada, you may apply for permanent residency. If you have obtained your live-in caregiver as a result of misrepresentation concerning education, training or experience, you will not be qualified under this category for permanent residency.

How can I apply for a live-in caregiver work permit?
To apply for live-in caregiver work permit from outside Canada, you must submit the following documents:

  • Successfully completed secondary school
  • Have related training or experience
    • Successful completion of six months of full-time training in a classroom setting, or
    • One year of full-time paid employment in such a field or occupation within the last three years (at least six months of continuous employment with one employer)
  • Have the ability to speak, read and listen to English or French at a level sufficient to communicate effectively in an unsupervised setting
  • An employment contract with their future employer

Note: Providing all necessary documents will not necessarily guarantee that a visa officer issues you a work visa.
